Alpaca Wool
Alpaca is a synonym for exclusivity and elegance. As such, competes with only a few other fine fibers, namely cashmere and mohair. Over 80% of alpaca production is concentrated in Peru and completes, in the international market, with the most exquisite fibers. Alpaca is naturally hypoallergenic; it comes in a range of 22 natural colours and it can be dyed. It is also very light and regulates temperature. Its exceptional quality is distinguished by its great versatility which is why it is used by well-known designers.
The hair of this extraordinary South American camelid has been used for thousands of years, especially in Peru, creating a notable textile tradition since ancient times. There are just about 4 million alpacas in South America
and 95% live in the South of Peru, where 80% of the worldwide alpaca fiber production comes from. The animals are bred mainly by peasant communities.
Peruvian alpaca differs from others of different origins because of its inherent properties such as softness, adaptability to dyeing and kitting versatility. Besides its 22 natural colours, from snow white to darkest black, including different shades of grey and beige, alpaca also shines in infinite shapes, style and textiles. This unique hollow core fiber is extremely light yet retains the ability to be warm against even the hardest winter chills. The fiber is extremely strong and so resistant to saturation that it is nearly water repellent. It is also free of lanolin, making it hypoallergenic.
Types & Qualities
There are two types of alpaca: Suri – has a coat that falls with remarkable density, luster and softness – and Huacaya – characterised by its crimped, fluffy, somewhat shorter fiber – . In both cases, their outstanding quality is distinguished by its broad versatility as it can be woven, knitted, crocheted and felted. Combined with silk, alpaca gets an improved drape, while blended with wool or acrylic produces a more affordable material, suitable for mass consumption.
