Peru has become the main supplier of Hass avocado in Europe, after covering the high demand of this superfood with massive shipments, reported the Exports and Tourism Promotion Board of Peru (PROMPERÚ).
Fresh Plaza, one of the most important online platforms in the fresh produce industry at an international level, emphasized the more than 2 million boxes of our flagship fruit that were shipped in week 22 of this year. This volume is considered the highest for the European market.
Because we are all living through a pandemic, the wish to remain in good health has substantially contributed to the increase of the demand of avocado in Europe. In fact, people are shopping once a week, which has increased the purchase of mesh bags that help ripen the avocados.
On the other hand, World Fruit, a fruit marketing and distribution company, underscored the great effort of Peruvian exporters to guarantee the supply of avocado with high quality standards and sizes above its competitors, despite the fact that COVID- 19 affected the normal development of exports.
The pandemic has accelerated the shift in consumption habits. Due to COVID-19, international consumers are more aware of the importance of eating healthy and the avocado provides a source of healthy nutrients. Moreover, the closing down of Horeca has increased the purchases in supermarkets and through e-commerce.
It is important to mention that the Peruvian exporting companies comply with the security measures established by the Peruvian government for the health emergency and they also have various quality certifications.
Shipments of Peruvian avocado to Europe between January and March were $64 million, 69% more than those registered in the same period of 2019. The countries that showed the highest demand were the Netherlands (+60.2%), Spain (+97.8% ), and Russia (+250.3%).
