Its international success is reflected in a series of prestigious awards and recognitions. In 2025, Peru was once again named the World’s Leading Culinary Destination at the World Travel Awards, reaffirming its position as a global gastronomic powerhouse. Lima has recently been recognised as the world’s top food city by prestigious magazine Time Out, and Peruvian restaurants regularly feature among the most acclaimed dining destinations in the world. This growing prestige is increasingly visible in the Netherlands, where interest in Peruvian cuisine has expanded steadily over the past decade. Today, there are approximately 20 Peruvian or Peruvian-inspired restaurants across the country and 25 throughout the Benelux region. These show the diversity of Peruvian gastronomy, from traditional dishes such as Ceviche and Lomo Saltado to contemporary interpretations that highlight Peru’s culinary innovation.

Among the different culinary styles originating from Peru, Nikkei cuisine has found particular success in the Dutch market. Combining Japanese techniques with Peruvian ingredients and flavours, Nikkei cuisine reflects Peru’s multicultural identity and appeals strongly to Dutch consumers, who value both culinary creativity and high-quality seafood. Its popularity has played an important role in increasing awareness of Peruvian gastronomy across the Netherlands. But Peruvian cuisine is not only seen at restaurants. Books also tell the story of our rich culinary heritage. Dutch-Peruvian author Katinka Lansink Dodero dedicates her newest book to the gastronomy of Peru. The publication follows the tradition of the so-called “Bible of…” books, a new trend that introduces the basics of different types of cuisines. By documenting recipes, ingredients, traditions, and cultural stories, such publications help deepen understanding of Peruvian cuisine and make it more accessible to international audiences.

Together with the work of chefs, restaurants, and tourism promotion initiatives, these efforts contribute to strengthening Peru’s reputation as one of the world’s most exciting culinary destinations. As interest continues to grow in the Netherlands and across Europe, Peruvian gastronomy remains a powerful bridge between cultures, bringing people together through its diversity, authenticity, and innovation.

This weekend, we celebrate a special moment in the Peruvian culinary calendar: Ceviche Day on June 28th, dedicated to celebrating Peru’s most emblematic dish. More than a national favourite, ceviche represents the essence of Peruvian cuisine: fresh, diverse, and deeply rooted in the country’s coastal heritage. Prepared with raw fish cured in citrus and balanced with chilli, onion, and traditional accompaniments, it reflects the same diversity and creativity that define Peru’s gastronomy as a whole.
