From the heart of the Andes to the runways of the world, Peruvian gemstones are emerging as new symbols of global luxury — once hidden treasures, now admired across the international stage.
From Brazil to Peru: Falling in Love with Opals
Mariana Magtaz, a Brazilian designer who found in Peru not only a home but the inspiration to create a high-end jewelry brand with a truly Peruvian soul. Her story with Peru began almost by chance. Invited in 2009 to the first Jewelry Congress of Cajamarca, she arrived without knowing the country or what awaited her. It was there that she discovered the mesmerizing Peruvian opal.
“Opals are precious,” she said. “Peruvians just needed to recognize their own value.”

The Birth of Gaya: A Brand with Identity
That realization sparked a mission. Mariana began teaching and training jewelers, designers, and artisans across Peru, spreading the idea that the country could shine internationally by recognizing the value of opals.
And so Gaya was born—a name inspired by Gaia, Mother Earth herself. The brand embodies authenticity, conscious design, and a strong commitment to using Peruvian stones.
“Gaya breaks away from the traditional gold-and-diamond formula. It creates something new, something with its own identity—Peruvian identity.”
Today, over 80% of Gaya’s gemstones come from Peru, each piece reflecting the country’s natural richness through a modern, elegant design language.
As Peru is renowned for its rich artisanal heritage, the aim is to explore how best to harness tradition as a launchpad for innovation and global relevance, balancing cultural authenticity with the evolving tastes of the luxury market.
“Our unique value lies in the fusion of Peruvian craftsmanship with sophisticated, modern design,” – Mariana Magtaz

Shining at Amsterdam Fashion Week
When Gaya was invited to Amsterdam Fashion Week, Mariana didn’t hesitate. “You can’t say no to an official fashion week. You just go—whatever it takes… Exposure at these forums will not only elevate our visibility but also showcase the sophistication and story of Peruvian jewelry to a global audience”.
The event marked a turning point. European audiences, accustomed to associating Peruvian jewelry with silver and handicrafts, were astonished by high-end contemporary creations.
“We showed that Peru also has luxury, high design, and modern sophistication,” she said proudly. It was a moment of validation: Peru could be a synonym for refinement.
Expanding into Europe remains a key ambition, and while the costs and logistics of such an endeavor demand careful planning, the leap is entirely achievable. Quality, storytelling, and innovation are the pillars for success.

Growing Pains and Global Triumphs
Despite the challenges, Gaya has carved out a space as a Peruvian brand recognized in the world of luxury jewelry. “We want Peru to be recognized for its luxury too. Why not?” she asks with conviction.
For aspiring designers dreaming of building their own brand, Mariana’s advice is both practical and empowering: “Don’t copy. Stay true to your design. It’s hard, it takes time—but it will happen. If you know where you want to go, stay on that path.”
Be patient, disciplined, and remain authentic.
